Flashback Friday-Sweet Sleep

sleeping homer

I wrote this poem on 4/18/2009. It’s funny because I just wrote two poems about my issues with sleep this week.

I can’t seem to grasp it
can’t get a hold of it
It slips through my fingers like silk
I manage to get a quick glimpse of it
but that glimpse is always interrupted
sometimes it’s a bad dream or a wayward thought
sometimes it’s a noise or the sun’s bright light
but something always seems to come between me and my sweet sleep

I have adjusted to sporadic, brief meetings with sleep
we walk past each other and wave
but we don’t stop and talk
like old friends
when I think about it
sleep has never really been too fond of me
Our relationship has always been a contentious one
I would read the dictionary
just so I could spend time in sleep’s presence
The older I get
the more tumultuous our relationship becomes
I guess sleep just wasn’t meant for me

There are days
every now and then
when the planets align
pigs fly
and hell freezes over
on those days
I experience
the most restful
known to man
It is on those days
that I feel most human
